IMG Mountain Guide Exam

Description:

The IMG Mountain Guide Exam takes 8 days. During that time the students are evaluated on all fields of mountain guiding, from personal climbing ability, to short-roping and knowledge of nature and weather. A strong emphasis is on good rope work, efficient work methods, risk evaluation and mitigation. During the exam the students will climb several routes using their skills to ensure clients safety and success.

Prerequisites:

Only those that have had a favourable outcome form the Mountain Skills Course are eligible for the IMG Mountain Guide Exam. In addition the students must have the following skills and

  • Be able to comfortably lead sport climbs up to 5.8 (bolts. Hnappavellir / Iceland).
  • Have climbed a min of 15 ice routes of witch at least 8 are multi pitch and 3 have a abseil decent. At least 8 of the 15 should be WI 4 or harder.
  • The students should also have climbed at least two “classical” Icelandic alpine route (min TD 300m).

Comparable climbs abroad will also be valid.

Evaluation:

The students are evaluated in all fields of mountaineering and ability to communicate with guests. Topics include; risk evaluation, personal skills, rescue knowledge, weather and terrain interpretation, rope skills and etc.

Qualifications:

A IMG Mountain Guide qualification is the highest standard achievable with in the IMG training system. This also makes this the highest achievable technical standard achievable in guiding in Iceland.

A IMG Mountain Guide is able to guide and instruct on all courses and tours offered by IMG as well as guiding on IMG expeditions.

The education is only fully valid once the students have also finished a comprehensive first aid course (Wilderness First Responder) and a professional avalanche course (CAA Level I or similar).
