Level II Hard Ice Guide exam

Description:

The Level II exam covers 3 ½ days and covers all areas of Hard Ice Guiding. The main topics are the same as on the Level I Hard Ice Guide Exam but with considerably harder demands on ability. The examination takes place on a glacier in the Vatnajökull National Park (Skaftafell).

Prerequisites:

The students are required to have completed a Level I Hard Ice Guide Exam and have 70 days of work experience in guiding on glaciers.

Evaluation:

The exam result is communicated to each participant individually. The evaluation takes into account among other things; ability to motivate and instruct, knowledge of the area and ability to entertain and educate guests, route selection, personal and client safety and rescue skills.

Qualifications:

A level II guide is able to guide all hard ice glacier walks and ice climbing on glaciers offered by IMG. As a general rule only Level II guides should work unsupervised on glaciers during the winter time.

Instructions / examination:

The exam takes 3 ½ days and is done on a glacier near Skaftafell. Two instructors per 6 students where the lead guide is New Zealand Mountain Guide (IFMGA) and the assistant guide a IMG Mountain Guide.
